playtown dev commentary
here i'll say anything about the creation of playtown. you can see playtown >here<

part one was pretty much made in a day, most issues came up when i was screwing around in godot trying to make collisions (even though i did not really need to) and also figuring out how to make my own dialogue and how to make things you can interact with display the right text.
at that point i still thought about making this into a real game and releasing it on itch but pretty much immediately i understood that maybe its just better to make it into videos rather than dump a zip file with like 4 miniscule walking simulators and a couple of mp4s onto itch.io.
also that would allow me to be lazy and make the project faster by not having to bother with a buncha stuff. like, even in this part the music in build 0.2 was added after recording.
^ what the hell? "tilesets"? these are not tilesets you dummy. decapitate whoever makes these images.
part 2 is weird. first part is ash and daisy talking which is kinda okay? i wanted to show their personalities more with this episode, though i dont know how well that came across. the snowman thing is supposed to tease the ending and also show both daisy's and ashley's opinions on wasting time on stupid dumb useless stuff.
ashley is a perfectionist, thinking every project she makes should be ironed out to perfection, great in every way she can possibly make it, with a bunch of different interesting mechanics and cool visuals. daisy is on the opposite side, thinking it doesnt matter how good something looks or sounds or feels as long as its something you make yourself and as long as its fun to you.
both sides are wrong in their own way, you need to stay somewhere in the middle, not oversimplifying but also not blowing things out of proportion while doing something. at least thats what i think? i dunno im just a monkey smashing my head against the keyboard accidentally making words. eek ook
oh also the spooky part yes. its fun! i filmed the closet door opening myself. the monster was drawn in paint in like 20 seconds. tried to find a super generic jumpscare sound.
the video is obviously styled like its made in windows movie maker (even with epic kevin macleod music) but you could probably notice that its actually very much not done in WMM. i downloaded the old WMM XP version but it just. didnt work. so i had to emulate it. its fine.:_)
the monster kinda looks like the mandela catalogue alternate that is used everywhere. originally i planned to make "ashley's scary video" a lot longer and dedicate it to making fun of analog horror cliches. but i didnt want to detour too much so i didnt. also it would probably be very very very much out of place.
^ the hands on this spooky drawing are not visible in the video due to them being black and the background also being black. but now you have seen them. run. he's coming.
i kinda like part 3. the switch to 3d is a pretty fun visual thingamajig. also i just rlly like making basic 3d models. everything 3d was made in blender and ported straight to godot.
the crayon daisy drawing was also quite fun to do. didnt even know i had crayons, almost accidentally found them. can't say much more about this part.
oh, by the way, whenever you see scrambled letters throughout the parts its the ROT cipher. if you want you can figure it out on your own fairly easily, nothing too interesting there though...
playtown's music is obviously. not great. and that's intentional!
i actually kind of like how "ash's abandoned guitar" turned out. i recorded it myself on an old abandoned busted guitar with no melody in mind or knowledge on how to play guitar.
this was a very fun project! i learned a lot about godot and had fun with the visual and even audio parts. i hope you kinda maybe at least a little teeny tiny bit enjoyed it as well.
game segments (3d and 2d) - godot
pixel art - libresprite (actually very much recommend using that, great free alternative to aseprite)
3d models - blender. wait, no, this one.
music - fl studio
